Lowest TCO in the industry
45% lighter
Environmentally friendly
Up to 10 minutes runtime at full load
Up to 10x more discharge cycles
Recharge to 90% in as little as 2 hours
0.9 Power Factor

More Compact and Lightweight
Lithium-ion batteries weigh 40% to 60% lighter and have a 40% smaller footprint than their VRLA counterparts. This translates into a remarkable power density level, where less space is needed to deliver the same amount of power.
Lasts Longer
Lithium-ion batteries have a significantly longer lifespan--around twice or thrice that of VRLA batteries on average. Compared to a traditional VRLA battery technology that typically lasts three to five years, lithium-ion technology can provide a battery service life of eight to ten years (or longer), often outlasting the UPS itself. This essentially makes the UPS almost maintenance-free with fewer or possibly no battery replacements throughout its lifespan. Unlike VRLA batteries, lithium-ion batteries offer a high life cycle, making it suitable for many applications where frequent charge and discharge cycles are expected.
Contributes to a Lower Total Cost of Ownership
Regarding the total cost of ownership (TCO), lithium-ion batteries can provide up to 50% savings over their life expectancy. This is primarily due to their longer lifespan, high-temperature resilience, reduced maintenance expenses (with fewer or no battery replacement), and reduced installation expenses. Although VRLA batteries can surely save you money upfront, think of the bigger picture and consider the TCO.
Faster to Recharge
UPS batteries need to be recharged as quickly as possible to full capacity. While VRLA batteries can take over 6 hours to charge from 0% to 90% of full runtime capacity, lithium-ion batteries take only around 2 hours to recharge. That reduces the overall risk of experiencing an outage before your UPS batteries have been fully charged.
The cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology has gone a long way to the advantage of many industries. With the many benefits it offers, a lithium-ion powered UPS is a must-have to secure your critical operations and lessen your operational costs.
Resilient to Higher Temperatures
Lithium-ion batteries can operate normally at temperatures of up to 40ºC without compromising performance. This is a clear advantage of this battery technology over VRLA batteries, which shed off about half their lifespan for every 10ºC temperature rise over 25ºC.
Since lithium-ion batteries have a wide operating temperature range, they become convenient for more extreme, non-traditional settings and facilities that don’t have enough cooling capabilities.
Comes With Advanced Integrated Battery Management System
Lithium-ion batteries come with an advanced integrated battery management system (BMS). This provides an accurate picture of the battery's health and runtime and protects the battery cells against current, temperature, and over- or under-charging. The BMS continuously adjusts battery charging to make the most out of performance and battery life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Are there different types of lithium-ion batteries?
A1. Yes. There are lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), lithium iron phosphate (LFP), lithium ion manganese oxide (LMO) and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) chemistries to name a few. Our designers favour NMC and LFP, given their performance and safety parameters. These are the same technologies used by major automotive manufacturers in their electric cars.
Q2. What is a lithium-ion battery?
A. Lithium is an alkali metal element; symbol Li on the periodic table. Utilizing Li in the design of a battery provides significant advantages over lead acid.
Q3. Lithium-ion batteries are not new, right?
A. Correct. Millions are used every day in our small electronics, laptops, electric cars and more.
Q4. Wasn’t Lithium-ion part of the issue with those hover-board fires?
A. True, but those batteries are different chemistries than the ones used in UPS applications which have far more stringent packaging designs. UPS battery solutions have a fail-safe shutdown mechanism which is activated in the event of a problem.
Q5. Does Vertiv recommend one over the other?
A. Each has differing properties that behave slightly different and may be appropriately used depending on the application.
Q6. What are the primary benefits of LIB over lead-acid?
A. LIBs provide impressive power density levels. This means you need less space to deliver the same power. They tend to last longer, weigh less, recharge faster and can operate at higher temperatures.
Q7. With such impressive benefits, what are the disadvantages?
A. Predominately initial cost, currently on the order of 1.75x that of VRLA. But a more complete TCO (total cost of ownership) evaluation would include initial cost, installation cost, delayed replacement savings, nuisance value of the replacement, value of space saved, disposal expense and maintenance costs.
Q8. Have they been tested in the data centre?
A. Though the accumulated runtime in the United States is currently low compared with VRLA, we can answer yes to this question given our experiences in several US installs and in Asia particularly.
Q9. Does Vertiv have specific experience with LIBs?
A. Yes. Our engineers and product teams have been on the leading edge of integrating them with UPSs and have fully studied and tested LIBs since 2011. In fact, we have operational customer sites across several continents.
Q10. Which of your UPS systems are compatible with LIBs?
A. Much of our midsize and large UPS product lines have been tested and certified for use with lithium-ion battery solutions and are UL approved.
Q11. How important is battery monitoring?
A. Very. Fortunately, lithium-ion batteries utilized with UPSs use integrated battery management systems which are part of the UL listing to enhance operation and safety. Additionally, the battery cabinets can be monitored via MODBUS output using traditional monitoring systems.
Q12. What is the impact on service and maintenance?
A. LIBs generally require much less maintenance. This saves on operating costs.
Q13. What about recycling and disposal issues?
A. Lithium-ion batteries are disposable, but not readily recyclable at this time. As the demand increases, new options are likely to develop. This is not that different than when VRLA's came onto the scene years ago.
Q14. Can an installation utilize a hybrid approach, whereby we mix battery technologies?
A. No, if you mean within a unique UPS system. But if more than one UPS system exists, there is no reason you couldn’t operate different type of battery solutions on each.
